If you believe your film has a strong chance for an
acquisition, and are targeting industry festivals, great;
but be prepared if you don’t get invites to top tier fests.
If you know your film will have an audience, you will find
the right festival path, even if you have to pivot to plan
B.
If you are, for example, planning for broad streaming
play, you will want to be careful with decisions around
virtual festivals. And if you are thinking about nontheatrical, community or educational screenings, you
will want to think about your target audiences, and how
your festival play can support these efforts, pave the
way for new relationships in certain regions.
Does your movie have a chance to play internationally?
If so you may want to consider some international
festivals, and a sales agent who could bring your film to
the major markets.
Though plans change, and the barometer for success
on the circuit is always subjective, it's still a worthy
exercise to consider various scenarios as you plan your
festival journey.
