Budgets
Speaking of money, do you have any left? Seriously,
after finishing a film you must determine a realistic
budget for your festival run. We’ll go over this in more
detail in the next section, but you will have costs, from
submissions and materials to travel and
accommodations. Again, knowing your budget range
will enable you to target a certain number of events.
Life
If you intend to submit to strong regional festivals
known for strong filmmaker turnout, and want to travel
and network, you have to be able to plan around your
current living situation. Family, work, and other
responsibilities can certainly influence your festival
travel. This is a category often overlooked but worth
giving some thought to. Again, you have goals and will
submit accordingly. You just want to be sure you can
realistically make the most of the participation.
4. Distribution
We devote a whole section to this later in the Workbook
but in a macro sense, consider your topline distribution
goals. Again, you will want to have a plan A and a plan
B but regardless, have some targets in mind.
