OVERWRITE Film Festival Playbook & Workbook SAMPLER (2) - Flipbook - Page 20

You will see a sample Tracking Sheet in the Exercises
section. I’ve put a few fests in there as examples, but as
you wind your way through this Workbook, your sheet
will take shape and evolve over time.
You can also review the archives of festivals you are
considering. See what films played there, from genres
to production quality. Some festivals lean more into
recognizable names. Others celebrate more
independent voices. Some favor certain genres or
themes. Some are Academy qualifying for shorts. And
thanks to COVID, some fests integrate virtual
screenings, but do they geoblock?
Be very careful to dig a little deeper if the festival is less
than three years old. Visit their website. Gauge their
films. Do they have an audience? Legit theater? There
are quite a few new events that either (a) can’t help you
reach your goals, (b) don’t have marketing or hospitality
budgets and/or (c) are just a scam.
3. State of Play
As you start to lay out your festival spreadsheet and
submission targets, you want to consider all the factors
outside of the events that could affect your decision.
