Rotterdam faces decreasing throughput but
makes strides in sustainability
T
he Port of Rotterdam
handled 13.4 million TEUs
in 2023, translating to a
7% drop compared to the previous year's 昀椀gures. Although the
container throughput in tonnes
was 130.1 million tonnes, it was
lower by 6.8%.
Roll-on/roll-o昀昀 (RORO) fell by
5% to 25.9 million tonnes, while
the break bulk sector saw a 15.1%
decrease, largely attributable to
the decline in container rates,
resulting in more cargo being
shipped in containers rather than
as break bulk. Additionally, the
throughput of dry bulk in 2023
was 11.8% down from 2022,
while liquid bulk throughput
was 3.4% lower than last year.
At Rotterdam, last year saw
more stability and a transition to
LNG. Increase in LNG imports as
Europe moved to replace pipeline
imports of Russian natural gas
saw throughput increase by 3.7%
to 11.9 million tonnes from 11.4
million tonnes the previous year.
The port also saw more LNG
bunkering activity.
Sustainability was a key
theme for the Port of Rotterdam
in 2023 with the Port Authority
investing a US$319.5 million on
key projects. Porthos, a CO2
transport and storage project
and the construction of a national
hydrogen network was initiated.
Additionally, new shore power
connections were put in place
and land reclamation for Princess
Alexiahaven was started. Key
investments are also lined up for
implementation this year, some of
which are critical in Rotterdam’s
energy transition ambitions.

UPS purchases two
additional B747-8Fs
PS has acquired two
Ufreighters
additional Boeing 747-8
from Qatar Airways
Cargo, reportedly the last two
B747-8Fs in Qatar’s fleet. This
move represents additional
capacity opportunity for the
American pure freighter airline
operator and aggregator, with
all eyes on how they will utilise
this. Once deliveries of both the
freighters are completed and
in service, UPS will have a fleet
of 30 Boeing 747-8F Freighters
to its name. Increasing UPS’s
portfolio of Boeing 747s is
essential to align with its
strategy of reducing fleet age
and improving efficiency. It also
allows for further removal of
MD-11 freighters with 32 of these
still in service under UPS.
