CHEMICAL LOGISTICS : FEATURE SPECIAL
For responsible handling of chemicals, various initiatives like ‘Responsible
Care’ by Indian Chemical Council are being laid out. By adopting those, chemical
logistics companies in India can demonstrate their commitment towards safety
and security by training the LSPs, the entire ecosystem to be involved.
“Training plays a pivotal role in the chemical logistics industry. It remains
and should be the topmost priority. Hazardous training and certi昀椀cation from
organisations like IMDG and IATA provide leverage to all stakeholders; ensuring
goals are achieved at the highest level,” opines Singh.
“It is undeniable that investing in the skills necessary for the future is crucial
for companies. They must also take action to bridge the skills gap by providing
current employees with opportunities for re-skilling and up-skilling. This will
ensure that the business is prepared for the continuously evolving technology
landscape,” expresses Darshan. A robust transformation plan, he says, is
essential for companies, and embracing a holistic talent management approach,
companies will be able to fully harness the immense potential of a green and
inclusive economy. “Ultimately, it is crucial for companies to discover e昀昀ective
talent strategies to ensure that their employees are fully invested in and actively
involved in transformation initiatives.”
“In addition to recruiting and training logistics workers, long-term workforce
planning should prioritise employee engagement. By taking a comprehensive approach
to managing their workforce, companies can mitigate the risk of labour shortages.”
“Preparing for change, reorganisation, and integration are all important factors
that companies must equally consider. As the landscape of technology continues
to evolve, there is an increasing demand for a wider range of skills in various
industries. Not only are operators and drivers required to adapt, but there is also
a growing need for experts in digital supply chain and data analytics. In order to
successfully navigate this wave of digital transformation, a strategic approach to
change management is crucial, and that is what we follow.”

Demonstration of
commitment to sustainability – by harnessing
the expertise and
passion of employees through extensive programmes
– is necessary in three major areas, viz. Energy, Water
and Waste in the entire life cycle of a product. Each
individual contribution is must towards achieving the
end goals. Here, company leadership has to act as
enablers and remain aligned with stakeholders' sentiments. Managements are already devising programmes
which are simplified and accepted by employees.
Their push by means of Lean 6σ initiatives towards
sustainability, such as Kaizen and CIPs for small ideas
as well as support in belt certification and utilisation of
blue, green and black belt projects in manufacturing and
distribution is helping build a culture around operational
efficiency through enhanced sustainability execution.
