SPECIAL FEATURE : CHEMICAL LOGISTICS
reinforce this commitment, comprehensive training
is provided to all stakeholders, including transportation partners and drivers. As part of our safety
strategy, we are all the more committed to adding
value through secure and sustainable operations,”
states Prakash Wagh, Regulatory compliance and
Country Transport Safety Advisor, Clariant IGL
Specialty Chemicals (CISC) India.
“Reliance Petrochemicals assigns the highest
priority to safety measures in all aspects of the
supply chain. Our four pillars of risk reduction
approach are Contractor Safety Management, Vehicle
Safety Management, Driver Safety Management
and Journey Safety Management,” explains Dinesh
Kumar Patel, Lead Chemist, Reliance Industries.
“We follow the following hierarchy of measures to
control risk – Elimination, Substitution, Engineering
Controls, Signage, Warnings and/or Administrative Controls. We ensure PPEs are worn like seat
belts at all times when driving. All vehicles should
mandatorily be checked for carrying emergency
kits with tools such as 昀氀ashlight, safety goggles,
昀椀re extinguishers, wheel wrenches and many more.
Vehicles must submit a journey plan as part of our
Journey Safety Management system before setting
o昀昀 for their destinations.”
“Further adding a layer of safety, we are currently
transitioning our 昀氀eet of tankers from mild steel to
stainless steel. One of the primary advantages of
stainless steel is its excellent corrosion resistance.”
Regulatory Compliance
The chemical industry operates within a framework of extensive regulations and
compliance standards governing various aspects like transportation, labelling,
packaging, and documentation. Strict adherence to these regulations is not only
crucial for steering clear of legal complications but also paramount in safeguarding
the well-being of personnel and preserving the environment. By upholding these
standards, the industry not only ensures its own compliance but also contributes
to a safer and more sustainable operational landscape.
Engaging in international chemical logistics entails navigating a landscape of
diverse regulatory frameworks, cultural variations, and intricate customs procedures.
Successfully managing these challenges hinges on a deep understanding of and
compliance with international trade laws and regulations. This is indispensable
for ensuring the seamless execution of cross-border transportation processes.
By proactively addressing these complexities, chemical companies can establish
e昀케cient and compliant global logistics processes, facilitating the smooth movement
of liquid bulk and products across international borders.
Aurobindo Mishra, General Manager, JSW Cement rightly observes “All
industries and supply chains are bound by regulations and compliance. But the
daily logistics of transporting hazardous goods around the world makes the
chemicals industry a special case.”
“Regulations with diverse and often complex international regulations for
transporting chemicals across borders can be challenging, let alone full compliance.
It is all about one version of the truth, and con昀椀dence in compliant execution.
Globally certi昀椀ed regulations such as the International Maritime Dangerous Goods
(IMDG) code for shipping by sea and the International Air Transport Association
(IATA) dangerous goods regulations for air transport provide in-depth support
for compliance across modes and around the world on practical implications
and must be followed.”
