Camden Council recognises that public buildings are a key
component for creating successful communities. Development
within the Camden LGA provides an exceptional opportunity
to set the foundations of sustainable, liveable, and prosperous
neighbourhoods. We are committed to applying forward thinking
and carefully crafted design strategy to achieve fit for purpose,
meaningful, exhilarating and delightful places for the existing and
emerging communities of Camden. This chapter establishes the
principles and guidelines which underpin successful design for all
Public Building types.
2.1
Introduction
A Public Building is a constructed set of spaces located together to create a place for members of the
community to gather and socially connect.
The type of Public Building that these spaces become depends on the use of the building.
2.2
Public Building Categories
Public Buildings in the Camden LGA, based on asset management strategies in place, are divided into
five categories: Very High Profile, High Profile, Medium Profile, Low Profile and Very Low Profile. Low
Profile and Very Low profile categories are not discussed in this document.
VERY HIGH PROFILE
Including CIVIC BUILDING | LIBRARY | TOWN HALL | ART GALLERY + THE LIKE
This Public Building type is a significant cultural icon for the wider community. It is a destination for
community members and visitors to gather for everyday visits as well as larger events. It is a large, high
profile facility with higher quality finishes, fixtures and services.
This Public Building type will always be designed and documented for construction by specialist
consultants engaged directly by Camden Council.
HIGH PROFILE
Including COMMUNITY CENTRE | SPACE FOR SERVICE PROVIDERS | EVENT SPACE + THE LIKE
This Public Building type is a central hub created for community participation. It is a destination for
community members to gather for everyday visits as well as local events. It is a multi-purpose medium
profile facility with medium quality finishes, fixtures and services.
MEDIUM PROFILE
Including SPORTS FACILITY BUILDING | PUBLIC TOILET + THE LIKE
This Public Building type is created for a specific functional requirement. It is attached to a destination
used by community members to gather for everyday visits as well as local events. It is a specific
purpose low profile facility with robust quality finishes, fixtures and services.
