5.5.2 Planting
Planting areas should be designed in accordance with the following guidelines:
− Consolidate garden beds to avoid small areas which could be trampled and are prone to drying out;
− Planting must meet the weed requirements set out by the NSW Department of Primary Industries, NSW
Weedwise;
− Toxic and high irritant plants should not be used;
− Annuals and special care plantings should be used only in limited, high profile places where a higher level
of maintenance has been negotiated;
− A minimum of 26 weeks establishment period should be apply to all new garden bed planting; .
− Minimum pot size:
+ Ground covers - 140 millimetres
+ Shrubs and hedge planting - 200 millimetres
− The maximum gradient for lawns is 1:4

Parks
− Local parks will not be irrigated beyond the establishment period. All garden bed planting should be hardy
and drought tolerant.
− Larger parks (district and regional level) have a higher maintenance frequency and special use areas may
be irrigated. This provides an opportunity for greater species variety in those areas.
Playgrounds
− Develop a planting palate using sensory planting integrated within the playground to create an area with
a variety of aromas, textures, colours, noises and shapes.
− Use tough and resistant plants that can handle interactions with children.
− If play spaces within the playground are separated by garden beds, informal access such as stone rocks.
through garden beds should be utilised.
− Tube stock planting should not be installed within playgrounds as they have a poor success rate in areas
of high foot traffic, such as next to play elements or in an areas where children will transit from one
element to another.
− Investigate using planting within fall zone areas that will still meet Australian Standards.
Sportsgrounds
− Garden beds in sportsgrounds will not be irrigated. All garden bed planting should be hardy and drought
tolerant.
− Annuals and special care plantings should be used only in limited, high profile places where a higher level
of maintenance has been negotiated.
