5.5.1 Tree planting
The NSW Government has set a target to increase tree canopy cover across Greater Sydney Region
to 40%. Refer section 2.5 of Greener Places Design Guide and objective 30 in the Greater Sydney
Region Plan. The same has been taken forward as one of the local priorities in Camden Council's Local
Strategic Planning Statement and Council's Sustainability Strategy 2020. Camden Council views trees as
a valuable, long-term public asset. As such, all effort should be made to protect existing trees and ensure
the health and longevity of any new plantings. The following guidelines apply:
− Existing trees should be retained and protected unless their condition is compromised or they are a weed
species. Where existing trees are found on site, an arborist assessment must be undertaken to determine
the condition, habitat potential, retention value and protection measures required;
− New tree species selection is to be guided by the Tree and Landscape Species List available from Camden
Council's website;
− Use of local native species should be promoted, particularly in natural areas and other open spaces
adjoining natural areas;
− Trees should be set back sufficiently (2 metres minimum) from paths and hard paved areas to allow for a
structural root zone appropriate to their mature size;
− All new trees should be a minimum of:
+ 45 litres containers within mass planting areas
+ 75 litres for in lawn situations
+ 400 litres for signature trees
− All new trees to be sourced in accordance with tests and measurements contained within AS2303 (current
edition): Tree Stock for Landscape Use;
− Trees to be planted in accordance with the standard detail. Refer to CSLD; and
− All new trees to be sourced in accordance with tests and measurements contained within AS2303 (current
edition): Tree Stock for Landscape Use.
