Design Guidelines – Planting and Vegetation
Camden Council views planting and vegetation as a valuable, long-term public asset. Vegetation allows
a degree of variety and creativity which can correspond to the area's role in open space network and
anticipated maintenance levels. To enable optimal use of vegetation, apply the following guidelines:
− Wherever possible, restore ecosystems by using a mixture of trees, shrubs and grasses consistent with the
natural Plant Community Type of the site that will help establish or expand the existing natural vegetation
of the site;
− Create a design that utilises the local and endemic vegetation of Camden LGA . The vegetation should be
integrated with the context;
− Protect existing native vegetation to allow for natural shade where possible;
− Construction/installation of any elements must not damage all native vegetation;
− If there are no existing trees, large canopy trees should be planted in suitable location for future shade;
− All planting areas should be protected by temporary plant fencing for at least a 12-month period. A typical
detail can be found in CSLD; and
− A 26-week establishment period should be apply to all new trees, plantings and lawns. Longer establishment
periods may apply under Development Application (DA) conditions, voluntary planning agreements and
works-in-kind agreements.
