5.4.13 Provision for dogs
The Camden LGA is home to many dog owners and Camden Council aims to make good provision for the
needs of animals and their owners. Under the Companion Animal's Act 1998 dogs under effective control
of a companion person are allowed in open space unless specifically prohibited by Council. Under the
Act dogs are not allowed within 10 metres of children's play equipment.
Dog off-leash area: Council-designated area of open space where dogs are allowed off leash either
permanently or at certain times.
The following guidelines apply to the location and design of dog off leash and dog exercise areas:
− Dog off-leash areas should be demarcated with a fence;
− Dog off-leash areas should not be placed adjacent to children's playgrounds;
− Dog off-leash areas should be located away from houses wherever possible to minimise potential conflict;
and
− The design and detailing of dog exercise embellishments such as fencing, gates and exercise equipment
should blend in and complement the quality and context of the space.
Dog exercise areas should have at a minimum:
+ 1 metre high fence;
+ double-gated entry;
+ maintenance access gateway;
+ regulatory signage;
+ seating;
+ water fountain with a dog bowl;
+ open ball play area and;
+ Additional embellishments that could be
considered are:
+ pathways;
+ picnic tables;
+ constructed shade;
+ off-street parking;
+ rock scramble areas,or
+ agility/educational equipment.
