Playgrounds
Art in playgrounds provides an opportunity to interpret or reinforce a playful idea or theme into a play
space. The artwork should be designed by a local artist in accordance with the Camden Council Public
Art Policy. The theme of the artwork should include reference to local context. Public art in playgrounds
must be:
− Approachable and welcoming;
− Integrated into the experience and function of the playground;
− Relevant and responsive to the site and function;
− Built to last; the artwork must be designed and located to withstand the condition of the site, and is not
applied to an element that will need to be replaced in the future;
− Designed and located to withstand the conditions and expected use of the site to allow children to interact
with the art elements; and
− Be certified by a playground certifier against relevant standards.
Drainage Areas
Drainage areas provide a unique opportunity for interpretative landscape art installations. Large portions
of land within the Camden LGA is intrinsically linked with the water cycles of the Nepean river and
surrounding creeks. The new engineered water processes can provide further inspiration for interpretative
or educational artworks. Public art must be:
− Integrated and integral to the overall quality and function of the space;
− Relevant and responsive to the site and function; and
− Designed and located to withstand the conditions of the site, including dry and inundated phases.
