5.4.8 Shade
Camden LGA experiences prolonged periods of excessive heat. Tree shade is one of the great assets of
green open space; however, many of the newly developed facilities rely on young tree plantings. These
will not provide sufficient shade for a number of years. To assist in providing comfortable use of the
facilities the following guidelines apply:
− Park shelter should be provided over barbecue and picnic facilities, which are not otherwise protected;
− At least 50% of designated seating areas should be shaded by trees or shade structures;
− Wherever possible temporary shade structures should be proposed until vegetation is sufficiently
advanced to provide natural shade; and
− Shade structure and park shelter designs should be robust, low maintenance, aesthetically considered,
and site appropriate. The use of timber elements should be minimised.
