5.4.7 Seating
Open space should provide a good variety of seating options. These would include traditional park
benches, seating walls, seating platforms, mounding and a variety of innovative alternatives. Refer to
CSLD for preferred seat specifications. The following guidelines apply:
− Seats should be well distributed and correspond to the anticipated intensity of use (approximately one
seat every 50 metres);
− At least half of the proposed seating should be located in areas where natural or constructed shade is
proposed;
− Seats and the associated leg zone should be located clear of the main paths of travel;
− Bench seats should have a hard-wearing base. The base pad should be sized to include the associated
leg zone;
− Movable public seats may be considered in specific circumstances at the discretion of Council officers.
Appropriate locations will be assessed based on community demand, safety through passive supervision
and maintenance factors;
− 50% of available seats (minimum one seat per park) should have extended seat base to allow for a
wheelchair. Refer to detail in CSLD;
