5.4.4 Skating, scooting and BMX riding
Skateboarding, scooting, BMX riding and roller blading are popular among children and young people.
Camden Council would like to provide safe and fun environments to allow for these activities, while
balancing the needs of other open space users. The guidelines below apply to park areas other than
designated skate parks:
− It should be assumed that all smooth surface paths would be used for skateboarding, scooting and roller
blading;
− Skating, scooting, BMX riding and roller blading should be discouraged in quiet and more contemplative
areas of the open space without relying on signage. This can be done through the use of unit paving or a
coarse path surface;
− Skate-specific forms and furniture may be provided outside of a formal skate park. These should be
grouped together where possible and located to avoid clashing with quiet and slow open space functions
(toddler play, contemplative gardens, etc.); and
− Landscape elements such as concrete steps, ramps, retaining walls and steel rails are appealing to
skaters. Where these are not intended for such use, consider incorporating discreet anti-skating details
such as steel ribs or recesses. Refer to CSLD.
