5.3.4 Raised walkways and bridges
Raised walkways and bridges are a good way to provide access within natural areas while minimising
ground impact. The following guidelines apply for raised walkways and bridges within parks:
− Walkways and bridges must be designed to blend in with the natural landscape, minimise visual dominance,
and fit within the open space context and character;
− Where a raised walkway or a bridge is part of an equitable accessible path of travel it must meet the
requirements of current applicable regulation;
− Where a raised walkway or a bridge is part of a shared path or cycleway it must meet the requirements of
the current Guide to Road Design Part 6A: Paths for Walking and Cycling Ausroads;
−
Higher balustrade and railing may be required under bicycle guidelines where applicable. Ensure you
comply with current applicable regulation;
− All structural elements must be constructed with rot-and corrosion-resistant materials such as precast
concrete or galvanised steel; and
− The walkway surface is required to be hard wearing, slip-resistant and aesthetically considered.
Appropriate materials include galvanised steel mesh, precast concrete planks, fibreglass grate, composite
timber materials.
