5.3.3 Cycling
An appropriate provision to encourage cycling both for recreation and active transport should be made.
The following guidelines should apply:
− Predesign analysis should include mapping of any existing or proposed cycling networks within the
catchment area;
− There should be safe and easy access from the surrounding street network to the open space by bike;
− Smaller (local level) areas are not required to provide designated cycling or shared paths. Larger (district
or regional level) areas should incorporate a shared bike path or a designated cycleway as appropriate;
− Where a shared path is provided, it must be designed as a slow environment. This can be achieved by
careful path geometry design, for example avoiding steep linear alignments to discourage high speed
cycling;
− Signage should be used to indicate start, finish, and any change of environment along a shared path. This
may include centrelines for higher usage shared paths;
− The following minimum bicycle parking provisions should apply:
+ Must be in accordance with the facility data sheet according to open space hierarchy.
+ Local level – bicycle rails should be located at either entry or at key destinations within the open
space.
+ District and regional level – bicycle rails at each entry, at the start and finish of shared paths, or at
key destinations along any shared path facility.
+ Bicycle parking should generally be located around the perimeter of the playground.
− For detail refer to CSLD.
