5.3.2 Trails
Trail design should include the following:
− Determining the acceptable use and trail hierarchy, planning the optimal route, deciding on appropriate
width, construction detail and gradients and cross falls;
− Understanding and creating a network of linked trails;
− Appropriate use of trails in natural areas can vary. Walking, jogging and on trail cycling are generally
supported;
− Trails should be located and constructed so that they do not compromise the carrying capacity or ecological
integrity of the natural area;
− The width of a trail could vary to accommodate natural features of the land. Generally the trail should have
a formed path width of 1.5 to 1.8 metres. Major trails should allow for additional vegetation clearance of
1 metre either side of the path;
− Trails can be compacted natural ground or compacted gravel with no edging. No concrete or bitumen
paths should be installed within natural areas except for perimeter paths at interfaces with other open
space; and
− For trail details refer to the CSLD.
