Drainage Areas & Recreational Spaces
Drainage areas are often located adjacent to recreational open space. In these cases, the drainage area
and adjacent public open space should be designed as one with specific attention to integrating their form
and function:
− Maintain view lines between parklands and drainage areas;
− Create opportunities for extending recreational use of drainage areas where it is safe and desirable to do
so;
− Where recreational use in drainage areas is proposed, provide easy, gradual transition between the
higher grounds of open space and drainage basins; and
− Those parts of the drainage system, which will have constant water flow or pooling of water should be a
minimum of 20 metres away from any playground.
