5.2.2 Interface with other open spaces
There is often no clear distinction between open space areas. They are frequently co-located and
experienced/understood as the same space by locals and visitors. This is generally a positive
correlation; however, care must be taken to ensure that user behaviour is modulated regarding
designated open space areas.
Natural Areas & Parks
To allow for a balanced outcome the following measures apply:
− No exotic species should be planted within 20 metres of the boundary to a natural area;
− Plantings from 20 metres should also not detract from the appearance of the naturalness of the
natural area;
− The tree protection zones and structural root zones of trees in natural areas adjacent to open space
should be documented and protected in any proposed works; and
− Where appropriate, specifically in riparian natural areas, a pedestrian path should be considered
along the perimeter or at the interface with other open space. A path would provide a visual barrier in
addition to allowing pedestrian access away from high value conservation areas.
