5.1.9 Public Buildings
Camden Council is committed to providing fit-for-purpose public buildings for the communities of Camden
to gather and to support community events. Public buildings that may be included within open space
areas include sports facility buildings, community centres, public toilets and other buildings to support
events. The following guidelines apply when providing a public building within public open space:
− If a building is to be included within an open space it must be considered an integral part of the space and
be treated as such throughout the design process. It is essential that the building's location ensures that
it is easily accessible and meets the functional needs of the user group;
− All operational components for building and open space services are to be integrated within the public
buildings and not located in the public open space to improve the presentation of the open space and
road reserve. Ensure access is provided to all service facilities in consultation with Camden Council,
in accordance with regulatory requirements and that all specific requirements of services providers are
met. If it is not possible to integrate a service within a building the service requirements for the public
facility should then be located separately and thoughtfully within the landscape. Screen those operational
services not located with in the building with a semi-transparent screen/fence and vegetation; and
