2.6.1 What is a Drainage Area?
A drainage area is any public land dedicated to stormwater management, other than a natural creek, river
or waterway. These areas are engineered to convey, redirect, treat and detain stormwater flows resulting
from urban development.
In the Camden LGA there are wet and dry detention basins, stormwater treatment areas, and stormwater
channels.
Wet detention basins such as Harrington Park Lake, Lake Annan, Lake Yandel’ora and Springs Lake are
prominent landmarks and are valued for their visual appeal.
Dry detention basins are often designed adjacent to open space in conjunction with urban development
in new release areas. They are prominent infrastructure areas in the midst of residential neighbourhoods.
Examples can be seen throughout Gregory Hills, Gledswood Hills and Oran Park.
Treatment areas can take the form of a variety of water quality measures including vegetated swales,
biofilters, and sediment ponds. These are often created in conjunction with detention basins as part of a
sustainable water treatment system.
Stormwater channels are any engineered waterways within public land. They could be formed channels,
open culverts, or swales.
Drainage areas must be carefully designed to integrate into the public domain. In addition to serving their
primary engineering function, they should provide recreational amenity, have visual appeal, and be safe
and accessible.
