2.4.1 What is a Playground?Camden Council believes that playgrounds are essential components of any new or existing development.A playground is a place specifically designed to enable people of all ages, abilities and cultures to cometogether and play. Playgrounds in Camden should consider all components of the play experience forchildren, young people and adults. Consideration should be given to a range of play types includingability-based play, nature-based play, cognitive play, physical development, imaginative play, graduatedrisk and play that encourages social development. The entire setting of a playground should be utilisedand enjoyed as part of the play experience. The range of equipment may help develop coordination,strength, flexibility as well as providing recreation and supporting social and emotional development.This chapter must be read in conjunction with the relevant Australian Standards and policies. Part 4.2: Specific requirements-Contained play facilities2.4.2 Playground HierarchyDecreasing in size, catchment andfunctionalityPlaygrounds in Camden are categorised as either local, district or regional. This hierarchy system isindependent of the park or sportsground classification system in which it is located.
