2.3.1 What is a Park?
2.3.2 Park Hierarchy
In Camden a park is defined as a publicly
accessible area of natural, semi-natural or planted
space for human enjoyment and recreation and for
the protection of wildlife or natural habitats. Parks
are areas of open space set aside for public use
inside the Camden LGA.
Parks in Camden are categorised as either
local, district or regional. This hierarchical
order is based on size, catchment, and level of
amenity, and reflects the need for a diversity of
park experiences across the LGA.
The core objectives for management of community
land categorised as a park outlined in the Local
Government Act, 1993 are:
− To encourage, promote and facilitate
recreational, cultural, social and educational
pastimes and activities;
− To provide for passive recreational activities or
pastimes and for the casual playing of games;
and
Decreasing in size, catchment and
functionality
− To improve the land in such a way as to
promote and facilitate its use to achieve the
other core objectives for its management.
