5.8.3 Lighting
Lighting should be provided where necessary for illumination of high-risk areas, to encourage active
transport by increasing the perception of safe passage, for decorative effect, wayfinding, and to enable
special functions. The following guidelines apply:
− The lighting scheme should consider the main sportsground entries, perimeter, main pedestrian and cycle
thoroughfares, special landscaped areas or trees, public art, and architectural elements;
− Lighting should be designed for pedestrian comfort and to prevent glare or significant light spill onto
private property;
− The following lighting levels should be applied:
+ shared path – P2
+ main pedestrian path – P2
+ special activity area – P8
− Standard poles and light fittings should be used as per the CSLD;
− Lighting should be energy efficient and a control system should be installed to prevent excess use;
− Lighting conduits should run in soft landscaping, where possible along a path. Conduits should be
positioned outside of the root zone of existing trees;
− Lighting in sportsgrounds should be applied with great care to ensure it contributes to the usability of the
space, yet it does not become excessive or affect the natural, green open space feel of the sportsground;
− For sportsgrounds, specific circumstance should be evaluated to assess the need for lighting. Typically,
significant through-site links, shared paths and outdoor event spaces may require site lighting; and
− A minimum 100 lux standard should be applied for a sports field via LED fittings; however, lighting should
be site-specific and as per the requirements outlined in the CSFS. Supporting areas such as pathways,
parking etc to be lit via sustainable options including solar options.
