5.6.5 Water sensitive urban design (WSUD)
Open space design should incorporate the key principles of WSUD. The layout of all open space should
integrate the urban water cycle and focus on retaining water in the landscape through re-use, storage and
infiltration. The following guidelines for all opens spaces apply:
− In areas without an approved water cycle master plan, a feasibility study must be undertaken for any local or
regional open space project to identify opportunities for incorporation of WSUD including new and emerging
technology;
− Where stormwater and flood management infrastructure is required, it should be considered from the
beginning of the project and should be integrated into the open space;
− Public access, safety, aesthetics and maintenance access should be considered early in the design,
engineering and decision-making process;
− Where possible, the design should open opportunities for public interaction and environmental education.
However, public safety and the integrity of the asset should be considered in areas where flooding or
inundation could occur;
− All components of a stormwater management system which are open to the public must be made safe and
their aesthetic should contribute to the surrounding environment; and
− Fencing to prevent public access should only be used where all other safety in design measures are not
feasible.
