2. Autism Appreciation and Awareness
In 2023, the CDC reported that one in 36 eightyear-old children are diagnosed with autism
spectrum disorder (ASD). Over the past several
decades, much has been learned about autism,
which affects individuals across all racial, ethnic,
and socioeconomic groups. It is nearly four times
more common in boys than girls, and there is
a strong genetic component to its diagnosis.
Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial
for improving overall quality of life. This class
will explore what is known, (and not known),
about ASD, dispel common myths, and provide
practical tools that can help foster positive and
inclusive environments. Most importantly, the
class aims to deepen participants9 understanding
and appreciation of the full spectrum of autism,
promoting true acceptance.
