In collaboration with the Peoria Women9s Club,
OLLI invites you to join the Peoria Chautauqua
Literary and Scienti昀c Circle, considered the
oldest continuous book club in the United
States. Lynette Steger professional educator,
content strategist, and Peoria Women9s Club
board member will moderate each meeting that
will focus on three of the Chautauqua Institute9s
annual book selections:
March 7: Apple: Skin to the Core by
Erin Gansworth
April 4: Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by
Isabel Wilkerson
May 2: Horse: A Novel by Geraldine Brooks

2. How Did Everett Dirksen Become a
Civil Rights Advocate?

In the 昀rst half of the 1900s, the Peoria area wasn’t
yet a hotbed of civil rights advocacy. That9s when
Pekin-born U.S. Senator Everett Dirksen came of
age and entered politics, and almost immediately
began sponsoring bills against racial inequality.
Using his own words and experiences, we9ll look at
the instances in his childhood, young adulthood,
and early career in Congress that set him up to be
a key 昀gure in passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

3. OLLI at the Movies: Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical
fantasy 昀lm based on the 1900 novel by L. Frank
Baum. The 昀lm is celebrated for its captivating
storytelling, iconic musical score, memorable
characters, and, of course, Judy Garland. It was
the use of Technicolor, however, that helped
transform it into an American 昀lm classic. Join us
as we step back in time to enjoy the wonderful
journey to Oz in its Technicolor splendor the way
it was meant to be seen 3 on the big screen at
Peoria Riverfront Museum.

昀lm buff and OLLI facilitator Tim Burns prior to

4. Illinois Treasurer9s I-Cash Program

Peoria Next Innovation Center
The Illinois Treasurer9s I-Cash program is an
innovative initiative aimed at reuniting residents
with their unclaimed assets, which currently total
over $5 billion. This program utilizes advanced
technology to automatically return lost money
to qualifying individuals, simplifying the claims
process signi昀cantly. Ashton Kulavic, the chief
of unclaimed property, and Kevin Schuster,
community affairs specialist, will discuss the
types of unclaimed property the state holds, the
process for claiming assets, and tips for preventing
property from becoming unclaimed. After the
presentation, they9ll perform on-the-spot searches,
giving you a chance to 昀nd out if you have any
unclaimed property waiting to be recovered.
