Glossary
Companion Fund: Donors establishing new endowed funds may set
aside a portion of their gift in this type of fund. The benefit is the
companion fund provides immediate support to the recipient of the
endowment fund while the endowment is being built.
Comprehensive Campaign: An organized fundraising effort to raise a
specified amount of philanthropic support for the broad needs and
opportunities of an entire institution in a specified period of time. Such
campaigns are designed to feature high-priority goals, with intensive
fundraising efforts focused on their achievement.
Cultivate: To engage and maintain the interest and involvement of a
donor, prospective donor or volunteer with an organization’s people,
programs and plans.
Current Use: Gifts to Boise State that are not invested in the
endowment, but used immediately by the university.
Donor: A person, organization, corporation or foundation that makes a
gift.
Employee Matching Gift Program: Many employers match their
employees’ charitable contributions, providing an easy and effective
way of leveraging your gift to Boise State. Some companies provide
the guidelines and forms to fill out online, or you can check with your
Human Resources office. Some companies match the contributions of
retirees and employees’ spouses.
Endowment: A permanently restricted net asset, funded by
philanthropy, in which the principal is protected and may be spent.
It is controlled by either the donor’s restrictions or the organization’s
governing board.
