Boise State University aims high. It has a mission to give its students the best possible
education, preparing them for future scholarship and lives beyond the classroom. It also has
institutional ambitions: to be a leader among its peer institutions, to maximize its impact, and
produce new, useful and exciting research. Donor support for endowed chairs serves these
goals.
“Endowed faculty positions are a powerful tool in both attracting and retaining the most
talented faculty,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs John Buckwalter. “These
prestigious awards directly impact the reputation of the institution and enhance the educational
opportunities of our students.” Additional donor-supported faculty positions and other giving
priorities like scholarships, research, and facilities are critical components of the University’s
Blueprint for Success strategic plan.
Chairs and other endowed faculty positions empower academics to hire graduate students,
enable undergraduate educational and research opportunities in and out of the classroom, start,
equip and grow research endeavors like laboratories, attend conferences, and more. At the
institutional level, they attract and retain the best minds, build the university’s reputation, and
sustain the growth of undergraduate and graduate student populations.
Currently there are six endowed chairs, seven endowed professorships, and 18 endowed
fellowships and directorships at Boise State, but the university envisions many more. Among the
university’s endowed chair holders is Julia Oxford, the Lori and Duane Stueckle Chair in Biology.
Oxford arrived at Boise State in 2000.
