A
s the sun peeked over Chewton Glen, the air
was buzzing with excitement. This wasn’t
just any Sunday, it was June 30th earlier this
year, and Lyndsay and I were about to embark on
the inaugural James Martin Gourmet Car Rally. The
sight that greeted us on the croquet lawn was nothing
short of spectacular—forty meticulously chosen
classics and supercars lined up, gleaming under the
morning sun. This was more than just a rally; it was
a celebration of automotive passion and gourmet
delights, promising a day full of gastronomical
food, breathtaking scenery and exhilarating drives.
After a sumptuous breakfast, the day began with
a relaxed meet-and-greet. Fellow enthusiasts and
collectors mingled, admiring the stunning lineup of all
the vehicles—from the sleek curves of Ferraris to the
timeless elegance of classic Jaguars. The atmosphere
was electric, with everyone swapping stories of
restoration projects and unforgettable drives. As we
moseyed from car to car The Wandering Band, —a trio
of two guitarists and a sax player—filled the air with
lively tunes, adding a joyful rhythm to the afternoon.
The Gentleman Racer’s ethos of celebrating car
culture was palpable in every conversation. James
Martin himself soon joined the gathering, his energy
infectious as he chatted with guests, sharing insights
into the day’s route and his culinary ventures.
A two course buffet luncheon was held on one of the
many terraces at the Hotel and the weather was kind to
us. A relaxed afternoon followed where we were able to
walk around the vast grounds at Chewton Glen.
AN EVENING TO REMEMBER
The evening provided us with a drinks reception
followed by a private dinner in the Lake Suite which
served as a fitting venue for James Martin’s 52nd
birthday celebration. The four course dinner was
immaculately presented and all accompanied by a
selection of fine wines. Of course there was Birthday
cake and an eloquent speech by our Host. All in all
a fitting tribute to the man who had brought us all
together for this unforgettable event.
