ISSUE 17§As the sun peeked over Chewton Glen, the airwas buzzing with excitement. This wasn’tjust any Sunday, it was June 30th earlier thisyear, and Lyndsay and I were about to embark onthe inaugural James Martin Gourmet Car Rally. Thesight that greeted us on the croquet lawn was nothingshort of spectacular—forty meticulously chosenclassics and supercars lined up, gleaming under themorning sun. This was more than just a rally; it wasa celebration of automotive passion and gourmetdelights, promising a day full of gastronomicalfood, breathtaking scenery and exhilarating drives.After a sumptuous breakfast, the day began witha relaxed meet-and-greet. Fellow enthusiasts andcollectors mingled, admiring the stunning lineup of allthe vehicles—from the sleek curves of Ferraris to thetimeless elegance of classic Jaguars. The atmospherewas electric, with everyone swapping stories ofrestoration projects and unforgettable drives. As wemoseyed from car to car The Wandering Band, —a trioof two guitarists and a sax player—filled the air withlively tunes, adding a joyful rhythm to the afternoon.The Gentleman Racer’s ethos of celebrating carculture was palpable in every conversation. JamesMartin himself soon joined the gathering, his energyinfectious as he chatted with guests, sharing insightsinto the day’s route and his culinary ventures.A two course buffet luncheon was held on one of themany terraces at the Hotel and the weather was kind tous. A relaxed afternoon followed where we were able towalk around the vast grounds at Chewton Glen.AN EVENING TO REMEMBERThe evening provided us with a drinks receptionfollowed by a private dinner in the Lake Suite whichserved as a fitting venue for James Martin’s 52ndbirthday celebration. The four course dinner wasimmaculately presented and all accompanied by aselection of fine wines. Of course there was Birthdaycake and an eloquent speech by our Host. All in alla fitting tribute to the man who had brought us alltogether for this unforgettable event.12
