The County of Opportunity
I
am honoured to be His Majesty King
Charles’s personal representative for
the county of Hertfordshire.
Hertfordshire is a county of great
diversity-possibly the most diverse
county in the United Kingdom -and
nowhere is that diversity more evident
than in our business community. We
have some great well known national and
multi-national business headquartered
here-GSK, Airbus, Tesco, MBDA, Warner
Brothers and Ocado to name but a few.
However, we also have a huge numberand I mean a huge number-of SMEs in
this county-quite aptly named “The
County of Opportunity” for-thanks to
our diversity and location-opportunities
abound. And as a retired business
owner who had my company located
in this great county-I fully appreciate
the benefits of running a Hertfordshire
business.
And whist all our Hertfordshire
businesses are “winners” sadly only a
very few-the very best-will win awards.
I am lucky to not only sit on the Prime

Minister’s Advisory Committee for The
King’s Awards for Enterprise and thus
able to see the vast variety of businesses
that enter the world’s most prestigious
business awards-but I am also very
fortunate to present a number of those
awards to a number of our most successful
businesses in Hertfordshire…and boy do
we do well as a county.
To put that into perspective-in 2024
Hertfordshire businesses won 9 out of
a total of 252 King’s Awards awarded
throughout the UK and we are one of the
most successful counties for each of the
last 5 years. It is vital that we keep up
this momentum and ensure that a good
number of our wonderful businesseslarge and small-are awarded for their
excellence. This year I have presented
to a business with 2 employees and
one with 3,000…! The King’s Award
for Enterprise is the only Royal award
which is self nominated and my team
of Deputy Lieutenants can put any
company interested in touch with one
of the previous winners who are happy
to mentor new entrants and walk you
through the process.
The Biz4Biz awards really show off our
diverse and successful businesses and
I very much look forward to meeting all
those entering and especially the winners.
