MEMORY STEPS COURSE
The charity is based at the LordLieutenant’s Charity Hub, at the Warner
Bros. Studios in Leavesden. This modern
and spacious base has allowed the Say it
with a Smile team to grow its educational
courses - most significantly, its ‘Memory
Steps Course’.
The course was designed by ‘Say it with a
Smile’ families, specifically for dementia
carers and those newly-diagnosed. Its
aim is to provide all attendees with
a bank of knowledge, techniques,
practical information and tools to cope
with the condition. It covers topics such
as understanding dementia from the
perspective of the person diagnosed,
medical support, care planning, benefits,
power of attorney, medication, nutrition
and community support.
By tapping into the expertise of medical
professionals, social care providers and
other dementia-based charities, course
participants have the chance to better
prepare themselves to manage the
condition and its progression over time.
‘ONE DAY THERE’LL BE A CURE’
It’s normal to feel scared and alone when
faced with a dementia diagnosis. ’Say it
With a Smile’s’ vision is to eradicate the
feelings of isolation, loneliness and anxiety
and to provide reassurance, support and
guidance throughout the journey that lies
ahead. The Smile team also works to break
down the stigma associated with the word
dementia, by showing people they can
continue to enjoy their lives.
“Ultimately, we want to bring smiles to
those diagnosed, their carers and their
family members”, says founder Hannah
Say, “and we’re driven by the faith that one
day there will be a cure.”
