IS THE I NNER
C RITIC ?
The Inner Critic comes in many guises. Some schools of thought suggest that it is a part of you that
has turned against you. Others suggest that it is in fact a helper, albeit showing up in a hostile way. A
hostile advisor if you like.
However its guise, characteristically it is critical, judgmental and undermines self-condence and selfesteem. It may be shaming, harsh, mean and punishing.
It may also be Machiavellian with the capacity to change and shift its opinions in a contrary like fashion,
making it hard to ‘pin down’.
The kinds of things it might say include:
• You have no idea what you are doing
• Do you really think you know how to do this
• Who do you think you are to do this
• Here you are again, got that wrong
• You really shouldn’t have done that
• I am so out of my depth here, I have no idea…
• I am such a failure, so useless…
• Why don’t I ever learn…
