2. Give the Inner Critic your attention
Sounds counter intuitive right? Why would we give airtime to something that just causes pain, guilt,
shame even, and a whole other bunch of other feelings?
When we are calm, relaxed and centred, it is easier to be curious and non-judgemental. We can listen
and hear more easily. There is more space to be open to possibility.
By giving our Inner Critic our attention we might learn something we didn’t know. Grab a notebook
and capture the following:

When the criticism shows up, what does it say?
•
When the criticism shows up, what are you feeling?
sensations do you notice in your body?
•
Are there any particular circumstances that trigger the criticism?
activated? Is there any particular person who activates it?
•
What other thoughts are present?
•
Pause and ask, what is this voice afraid of?
perhaps it is not ready to come right now.
•
What does the critic not want for you? What is it protecting you from? What is the safe space it is
creating?
•
Whose voice is this? Is it really yours?
•
Are there any patterns in all of this?
What emotions are present and what
Wait quietly.
