Introduction
As Bergmeyer’s Corporate Social Responsibility + Sustainability Manager my primary goal is to link
our values – creativity, connectedness, and curiosity – to our practice through holistic and ecologically
sustainable routes. Every day I am privileged to work with colleagues who are dedicated to their
professions AND connected to their communities through public service and volunteer work. At
Bergmeyer we are both curious about the state of the world and determined to make a positive impact.
As the climate change crisis continues to unfold, design professionals are mounting various responses
to mitigate and repair ecological and societal damage connected to the construction and operation
of buildings. In 2023, Bergmeyer introduced 昀椀ve sustainability focus areas: Carbon Tracking, Materials
Transparency, Energy, Resilience, and Equity. While we will initially focus on the 昀椀rst two areas, all will be
brought into sharper focus in 2024.
In the near term, we are all grappling with how best to measure and control both embodied and operational
carbon in our projects to lower our projects’ overall CO2 emissions. For several years we have seen a
steady reduction in energy use by participating in the AIA 2030 Commitment; this year we will begin to
model and track embodied carbon in our project work and expect to implement o昀케ce-wide design and
calculation tools that are calibrated to our practice groups.
We have also begun to grapple with the incredibly complex and often obscure impacts from building
material and retail 昀椀xture supply chains. Tracking and analyzing the life cycle of any product – from material
extraction, through production into implementation, all the way through to demolition and disposal –
is challenging. As Rachel notes in her letter, the launch of Bergmeyer+ is central to our collaborative
problem-solving approach: we are working both with our clients AND with manufacturers, fabricators,
and others up and down the supply chain to e昀昀ect meaningful change in the world. Our partnership with
Parallel Sustainability is rich with potential.
We have made good progress and there is much more to do – but like everything
at Bergmeyer, we approach these problems with curiosity, enthusiasm,
and vigor!
