The 2023 Hip Hop
Architecture Scholarship
Known as “the Hip Hop Architect”, Michael Ford, AIA, NOMA, believes
that one way to make architecture more available to young people from
underrepresented communities and to therefore make the profession
more diverse is to use the language and rhythms of hip hop as a way to
see, understand, and describe the built environment. To advance this
mission, Ford runs a national series of week-long design workshops
called the Hip Hop Architecture Camp that “positions Hip Hop culture as
a catalyst to introduce underrepresented youth to architecture, urban
planning, and design.”
Bergmeyer has been a 昀椀nancial supporter of the Hip Hop Architecture
Camp (HHAC) since 2020. In 2021, we stepped it up by creating and
launching the 昀椀rst Hip Hop Architecture Scholarship – an annual
opportunity for a college-bound architecture student to experience a
one-week paid internship in our Boston o昀케ce. The 2023 recipient of
the HHAC x Bergmeyer scholarship/internship program was Kamryon
Johnson of Detroit, MI, a senior at Cass Technical High School in 2023.
Kamryon spent a week in July 2023 at Bergmeyer's Boston o昀케ce
working on a prototype dorm room in昀氀uenced by hip-hop culture,
treating the Bergmeyer team to an extraordinarily well-developed 昀椀nal
presentation that featured movable wall panels and bold color palettes,
and learning about our collaborative approach to design. Kamryon is
currently in her 昀椀rst year at the University of Detroit Mercy's School of
Architecture and Community Design.
