BERGMEYER BELIEVES THAT DESIGN PROFESSIONALS CAN
MORE EFFECTIVELY ADDRESS THE GLOBAL CLIMATE CRISIS IF
WE LEVERAGE THE POWER OF OUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS.
At Chain Store Age’s 19th Annual X/SPECS Conference, Bergmeyer’s Christian
Davies delivered a “call to action” keynote address that gave the executives of the retail
industry in attendance a lot to think about. Titled “Retail’s New Horizon”, he challenged
the industry to “reboot” and become part of the solution to the global climate crisis.
Recognizing the end of what used to be perceived as “seemingly endless resources,"
he pointed to the potential for retail brands to seize the moment and re-invent
themselves, becoming more socially conscious and environmentally responsible.
In response to an abundance of follow-up inquiries, Bergmeyer partnered with
Chain Store Age to release a series of Christian’s videos with insights
into the evolving retail landscape.
With the publication of the American Institute of Architects’ 2021 – 2025 Strategic
Plan, it became very clear that climate action and social justice were now among the
AIA’s top priorities. Bergmeyer’s Mike Davis has contributed to many of the initiatives
that were part of this shift. Beginning in 2018, under his leadership came the effort to
amend the AIA’s Code of Ethics, making sustainable design an ethical imperative. As
a volunteer to chair the AIA Committee on the Environment’s newly-formed Advocacy
committee, Mike served on the AIA’s Climate Action Plan task force in 2019. He was
appointed to the AIA Government Advocacy Committee, publishing the Institute’s first
triple-bottom-line Policy Platform in 2020. Mike then represented the AIA at COP26 in
Glasgow in 2021 in their first year as an official NGO observer organization.
