Breaktime is a Boston-based nonprofit that believes in
“curbing the cycle of young adult homelessness by bridging the gap
between unemployment and housing security.” At their Portland
Street facility in Boston’s Bulfinch Triangle, they give their “associates”
(their young clients) access to a three-part transitional employment
program called “Launchpad,” “Liftoff,” and “Stable Orbit,” designed
to teach interview skills, financial skills, and credit counseling, and
place associates in jobs in local small businesses. The Breaktime
headquarters provides classroom spaces as well as bathroom,
shower, and laundry facilities for their associates to get themselves
ready for employment.

Which is where Bergmeyer came in! Learning from the BSA Foundation
that this organization needed design and construction document help to
make much-needed renovations on Portland Street, Bergmeyer’s Social
Responsibility Team (SRT) took Breaktime on as a pro-bono client. A
project team led by Sarah Kirwan and Jessica Williams worked with
Breaktime’s Operations Director Blake Noyes to move forward with the
first phase of construction in 2022. Says Designer and SRT co-chair
Sarah Kirwan: “It has been very gratifying to work with an organization
with a mission as important as Breaktime’s. It’s great to see the
work we do as design professionals go to a cause like ending youth
homelessness in our city.” Kirwan expects Bergmeyer’s work with
Breaktime to continue into 2023.
