Marla H. Corts Mission School 2022 - Flipbook - Page 5
Location
MHCMS began on a dense jungle site with students sitting on tree stumps in the village
of Dordeneewein. Because of Dordeneewein’s isolation from other, more exposed
surrounding communities, the mindset of the region (population about 20,000) is still
strongly rooted in the traditional beliefs of their ancestors which are based on animism,
spiritism, and superstition. In 2001, the Lord graced (EGIM) to break through these
barriers and establish the first Christ-centered school, Marla H. Corts Mission School, to
provide primary and secondary education in a Christian environment to the children of
Dordeneewein Village, Gbee/Dorwudu District, Lower Nimba County Republic of
Liberia.
Ground Zero
Marla H. Corts Mission School’s campus has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Starting from “ground
zero” (photo above) with only a School Building and Chapel, the campus now consists of a Principal’s House (added
2002), Girl’s Dormitory (added 2004), Teacher’s Quarters (added 2004), Boy’s Dormitory (added 2006), School Library
(added 2008), and Village Shop (added 2007).

There were those in the village who had longed to attend school for years. An elderly village
mother, Martee Giontoe, was so excited to hear of the coming of the school to her village,
that she wanted to contribute to the building process. She carried sand in a bucket, on her
head. This sand was used to make bricks and mortar. While there were those that did not
see the need or importance of having their own school to attend within the community, it
was delightful to see parents and members of the community who were in support of the
school and willing to help with its development.
