Topic #5
SEX IN MARRIAGE
All humans are sexual beings and this effects the physical, emotional, social, mental,
and spiritual aspects of our being.
The scripture presents a clear stance on the sexuality of man. God created man and
woman and it was good (Genesis 1). He created maleness and femaleness, the two are to be
partners in creation, for it wasn’t good for the male to be alone (Genesis 2:18, 23). The
original creation was good, designed by God. Yet, when sin entered the world, it caused the
misuse of this good creation (Romans 1:24-25). So it is that one often loses sight of the
goodness of sex. With responsible use and appreciation of the goodness of sex, one can
overcome these negative idealizations.
As well as for pleasure, God’s purpose for creating the male and female sexes was for
population the earth. Genesis 1:28 says that God instructed Adam and Eve to “be fruitful
and multiply.”
Scripture also records in Proverbs 5:18-19 that man is to “rejoice with the wife of his youth
and let her love fill you with delight.” The sex act is the highest form of intimate
communication. The Bible uses the word “know” when referring to it (Genesis 4:1). Such
an in-depth communication is reserved for a lasting committed relationship — marriage.
This is a covenant between two people who render themselves to each other (I Cor. 7:4).
Irresponsibility occurs when sex is misused outside of the marriage relationship. The Bible
speaks mostly about sex in marriage (Matt. 5:27-32, I Cor. 7:1-9); nothing in a dating
relationship should violate the future of intimacy in marriage. I Thessalonians 4:1-8 and I
Corinthians 6:9-10 proclaims the incompatibility of Christian life and immorality.
