Topic #3
ROLES IN MARRIAGE
The roles of husband and wife carry with them various duties and expectations. In
essence, each person has already begun to formulate the job description for the perspective
role by observing others. Your descriptions were formulated by the roles you saw your
parents play. You unconsciously expect your roles to be the same as they were in your
family. Likewise, the media establishes certain duties for a husband and wife. The degree
to which one internalizes these effects role expectations.
Problems arise when each person witnesses a different job description; one that is
not compatible with the expectations of the other. Thus, it is necessary to learn what the
Bible says about the role of the wife. By so doing, you establish a firm foundation upon
which to work through the details of your job descriptions so that the two will compliment
each other.
Marriage is not only a statement between the couple, but about the relationship of
God to the union of the couple. Marriage is God’s divine plan for the union of the two. It
is an earthly model of the relationship of Christ and the church (Eph. 5:24, 18).
Success in duplicating this model lies in the relationship each person has with Jesus
Christ.
