us better identify what type of additional training, certification or
education may be required for the
veteran to become an employee.”
Callari adds that The Baltimore
Station also accommodates veterans’ changing needs. “We are treating more veterans with physical
limitations, so we adjust our services in order to better support that
veteran. For example, purchasing
heavier silverware for veterans with
Parkinson’s disease and providing
cushioned chairs for our senior veterans.”
Paramount to The Baltimore
Station programming and what
separates it from other service providers is the exposure to prosocial
activities. Art, music, drama and
journalling help to replace negative
behaviors like drug and alcohol
use and can be practiced no matter
where the veteran decides to live after graduation.
“They also have opportunities to
give back to the community. Our
men accompany us to hand out
clothing, socks, bottles of water
and food to the homeless community. The homeless community is pretty tight knit in Baltimore, so many
times our veterans will see people
they know, and they have an opportunity to talk to them and show
them how far they’ve come.”
The Baltimore Station, though primarily serving veterans from Maryland, welcomes veterans from across
the nation. They accept referrals
not only from the VA but also from
physicians, non-profits, community organizations, and individuals.
