INDEPENDENT LIVING
A purposeful life
A retirement community
that does more
By Margit B. Weisgal, Contributing Writer
“
I’m not ready to retire. I’m still working a few days a week, but we know it’s
time to downsize and plan today for tomorrow.” Or, maybe you’re saying to
yourself, “We’re young enough to enjoy this time of our lives and a life-plan
community would make that easier.”
Whichever the case may be, give
serious consideration to independent
living at Lutheran Village at Miller’s
Grant, a faith-based not-for-profit life
plan community that welcomes 60+
adults. Nestled between Ellicott City
and Columbia on 50 acres in Howard
County, it’s close to everything you
could need or want, along with many
opportunities to maintain an active and
engaged lifestyle while being part of a
warm, caring community.
What sets the community apart
from other life plan communities is the
boutique-like setting designed for residents to pursue their life-long interests, engage in lifelong learning, make
new friends and take the unnecessary
stressors out of life.
Residents have a shared interest
in supporting others and the community where they live at LVMG and, more
broadly, in Howard County. Recent
contributions have included supporting
Blessings in a Backpack for Swansfield
Elementary School; collecting baby
clothing, supplies and food for the
Columbia Pregnancy Center; and supporting the Indian Cultural Association
and Howard County Food Bank. In the
LVMG community, independent living
residents volunteer in assisted living –
whether it be helping to transport those
residents to meals or provide them with
company – and with a variety of other
volunteer options.
The opportunities for you to explore
your interests are endless at LVMG. The
community team of professionals are
responsible for seeing that residents
live fulfilling lives through active living.
Daily programs available include fitness,
arts and crafts, lifelong learning classes,
resident clubs (e.g. book club, computer
club) and more can easily fill your days.
“Plus,” says Donna Snyder, director of sales and marketing, “we have
Flourish, our award-winning senior wellness program. Activities address every
aspect of life to keep residents healthy
physically, mentally, emotionally and
spiritually.
“The value in being a part of a
CCRC,” says Snyder, “is the assurance
you have for your future. Our residents are special and actively care for
each other. Even our team members are
part of the LVMG community. Residents
never feel isolated or alone here.”
Snyder recommends making a plan.
“The benefit of a plan,” she says, “is
that things can change on a dime. If you
don’t have a plan, you’re not prepared
for life’s ‘what ifs.’ For example, what if
you need a higher level of care due to
a medical issue? As an LVMG resident,
you’re provided with a continuum of
care.”
When should you start looking at
retirement communities? Snyder suggests you do that when you’re in your
early seventies. “You want to be able to
enjoy a relatively care-free lifestyle for as
long as possible. No need to mow the
lawn, shovel snow, fix repairs or perform
routine maintenance on your residence.
It can actually be a lot less expensive
to live here than wherever you currently
reside because so much is included.”
