Edmonson helped lead APG through COVID
Base’s 17th commander will be stepping down June 7
By Tony Roberts
After nearly three
years, Maj. Gen. Robert L.
Edmonson II is stepping
down as commander of
Aberdeen Proving Ground,
Harford County’s largest
employer and a key military installation, on June 7.
Edmonson became
APG’s 17th commander
on Aug. 6, 2021, amid the
COVID -19 pandemic.
Unlike other organizations,
APG did not shut down, but
the base changed how it did
things.
The following year, APG
moved to Health Protection Condition Alpha, its
most relaxed health emergency posture, which gave
commands on base the
option to bring 100% of
their workforce back into
the workplace.
During his tenure,
Edmonson maintained a
workforce of more than
21,000 as businesses and
organizations shut down
during the pandemic.
As the commanding
general for a 9,000-person,
two-star global command
and senior commander of
a 28,000-person military
base, Edmonson serves as
the U.S. Army’s Command,
Control, Communications,
Computers, Cyber Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and medical
material integrator, according to the Army website.
Edmonson played a vital
role in organizing support
services and infrastructure
with installation tenant
commanders while participating in various events
aimed at strengthening
ties with community and
industry partners.
“It has been an abso-
lute pleasure to have MG
Edmonson and his wife
Emily as a part of our
Harford County family,”
County Executive Bob
Cassilly said. “We have
enjoyed an excellent working relationship with MG
Edmonson since he first
arrived at APG. I could
not have asked for a better
partner in our efforts to
better align the interests of
Harford County and Aberdeen Proving Ground. I
very much appreciate his
friendship and professional
competence. Rob has been
a strong supporter of our
community.”
During Gold Star
Spouses and Mother’s and
Family’s Days, Edmonson
led multiple events honoring the survivors of fallen
soldiers within the local
