program incorporates additional math coursework than other programs, particularly with statistics, calculus and linear algebra. This is above
required cybersecurity engineering courses
related to processes, programming, information
assurance, network protocols, hacking, software
engineering, digital forensics and other essential
topics.
The medical emphasis with Coppin’s program is based on the need to protect patients
in medical facilities and those receiving telemedicine services not only from data breaches,
but also equipment and systems malfunctions
due to compromised security. Unlike desktop
computer-related functioning issues, when it
comes to medical systems, it can mean the difference between life and death. It can relate to
unintended changes in diagnosis or medication
administration; it could mean giving diabetic
patients the wrong medication that could kill
them, Williams explains.
“This cannot happen… that's why [we must
have] reliable, trustworthy systems,” Williams
explains. “It's not just the cyber person that's
involved in providing that service. From the
beginning, when you start with the requirements
for design implementation and testing [of] the
normal cycle for engineering products, you want
to make sure that the cybersecurity engineer
plays a major role in all decision making, including threat modeling, trying to mediate what
threats are foreseen to happen, putting all those
in place, so that the system does not fail.”
