The CDC provides this additional information:
• CDC recommends the 2023-2024
updated COVID-19 vaccines: PfizerBioNTech, Moderna or Novavax, to
protect against serious illness from
COVID-19.
• Vaccine recommendations are based
on age, and in some cases, time since
last dose, the first vaccine received
and immunocompromised status.
• Side effects after a COVID-19 vaccine
are common; however, severe allergic
reactions after getting a COVID-19
vaccine are rare.
• Hepatitis B
• Tdap is covered under Part D (prescription drug insurance)
• Mpox (monkey pox)
• Meningitis (infection of the brain and
spinal cord)
What Does Medicare Cover
From most pages on the Medicare website (www.medicare.gov), there is a quick
search: “Is my test, item or service covered?” Most vaccinations are covered under
Medicare Part B but some, like COVID-19,
are covered by Part A. Some are based on
your risk for the disease or illness. Here
is a short overview, but double check the
Medicare website for specific shots.
• Part B covers costs for flu shots every
flu season
Other Vaccinations You May Need
Here’s an abbreviated list of vaccinations you may need:
• Measles, Mumps, Rubella
• Varicella (chickenpox)
• Human papillomavirus
(sexually transmitted disease)
• Hepatitis A
• COVID-19
• Pneumococcal
• Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Shot:
Medicare drug coverage
(Part D) covers the RSV shot
• Shingles shots are covered under Part
D (prescription drug insurance)
Most primary care physicians keep a
list of your vaccinations when you get them
at the doctor’s office. If you get a shot at a
pharmacy or other location, let your doctor
know what vaccination you received and
the date. You PCP should be the gatekeeper to your medical care, having the best
overview of your health.
You should also keep a list of what shots
you get and the date. And while we’re on
the subject, keep a list in your wallet or
handbag of what medications you take, the
dosages and how often. If anything happens to you, having that information will
help the treating physician.
It is incumbent upon us to advocate for
ourselves. The problem with that is we don’t
always know who to trust and there is a
lot of misinformation out there. Check with
your doctor as to what is best for you. Stay
protected and stay safe.
