RETIREMENT
A home for life,
care included
An all-inclusive lifestyle
at Fairhaven
By Margit B. Weisgal, Contributing Writer
F
airhaven, located halfway between Baltimore and Frederick in Sykesville,
Maryland, is a charming continuing care retirement community (CCRC),
one of the five Acts Retirement-Life Communities in Maryland.
When it comes to retirement, one
excellent option is to relocate to a
CCRC that provides independent living
along with everything you could ever
need for the rest of your life. Housing
is on one floor, you have access to fine
dining, a fitness center, health services
on campus, six different nature trails
and covered walkways that wend their
way through its 300 acres. However,
what really sets Fairhaven apart is
being a member of a Life Care community.
Susan Arcadia, Executive Director
of Fairhaven, extolled the virtues and
benefits of moving to Fairhaven. “There
are two basic types of contracts when
you move to a CCRC. One is Life Care;
the other is fee-for service. With Acts
Life Care, your contract is all-inclusive:
your residence, services and amenities.
The monthly fee will not increase based
solely upon your need for a higher level
of care. That means if, in the future,
you should need assisted living or
skilled nursing care, your monthly fee
does not change. That peace of mind
as you get older is priceless.
“Fairhaven residents have a great
sense of security. It is a gated com-
munity,” says Arcadia. “Residents and
guests have to present themselves
before entering the campus. And
everyone is greeted by a security officer at the welcome house.”
Among the dangers connected
with aging are loneliness and isolation. Fairhaven’s Life Engagement
Coordinator focuses on many enrichment activities to keep residents
engaged. There are also life-long educational opportunities and wonderful classes: Yoga, walking, balance
classes, reiki and water aerobics in the
indoor pool, something for everyone.
The community has over 70 committees managed by the residents and
does lots of volunteer work. Everyone
at Fairhaven is extremely engaged and
active; last year, they spent almost
20,000 hours volunteering with non-
profits in the area and on campus.
Janine Hume, Fairhaven’s Senior
Manager of Community Sales and
Marketing, loves the people she’s met
over the years. “Most people looking at
a retirement community are savvy and
have done their research. Our life care
contract is unique. When they see the
benefits, they have peace of mind.
“Despite that, I help them make
what is a very difficult decision as this
is going to be their last home, but it’s
the residents who embrace the newcomers and make them feel a part
of the community. That empathy and
warmth helps them fit in immediately.
They’ve met and made new friends.
“It’s a wonderful contract,” Hume
