Key terms
Symbolises the holistic Trinity of egg, sperm, life or mother, father, child.
Symbol for ‘Begin Anew’ — for BabyCues it represents the miracle and beauty of new life,
new family, ‘anew’ way of understanding and nurturing that supports ‘a newborn’s biology’.
This is a hei-tiki. Many cultures of Polynesia, including the Maori of New Zealand, use this
symbol in their carving. These days it is likened to an embryo and is thought to be endowed
with magical powers for fertility. I have included it in BabyCues to represent the New Zealand
families that took part in the survey, and because it is a special symbol in my life.
